Most safaris show you endangered animals. This one introduces you to the people who study and protect them. At each of four camps, a specialist joins your game drives: lion and cheetah researchers in the Maasai Mara, giraffe and wild dog experts in Laikipia, rhino and Grevy’s zebra scientists at Lewa, and the Save the Elephants team in Samburu.
Between camps you fly low in your own aircraft: across the Laikipia plateau, along the Ewaso Ng’iro river, past Mount Kenya on the way home. Nine days, four ecosystems, no road transfers longer than the drive from the airstrip.

Day 3An optional dawn walk with a Maasai guide on the plants his family still uses as medicine. Then take off north and fly low across the Rift and the Laikipia plateau to Loisaba.

Pack soft, pack light

Most safaris treat the plane as a bus. We think the hour between camps can be the best of the day: low over a river, circling a herd, landing where no road goes. So we build trips around the flying, keep the same pilot with you throughout, and never put you on a schedule that isn’t yours.

Is it safe to fly in small aircraft in Africa?
It is when the operator does things properly. Our aircraft are maintained to [KCAA / ALS] standards and flown by experienced bush pilots, most of them flight instructors; our chief pilot has more than 9,600 hours in the region. [Add AOC and any audit.]
I’m nervous about small planes. Can I still do this?
Many of our guests are. Your pilot will talk you through the flight before take-off, you’ll wear a headset so you can hear and ask anything, and we fly in the smooth morning air whenever we can. On a private safari the same pilot is with you all week, which helps.
How many people fit on the plane?
It depends on the route, the strip length, the altitude and the weather. As a guide: up to [10] in the Grand Caravan, 6–8 in the PC-12 and King Air, and 4 in the Cessna 206.
How much luggage can I bring?
15 kg per person in a soft bag, plus 3 kg hand luggage. Hard suitcases don’t fit the hold. On a private charter with fewer guests there’s often more allowance; we’ll confirm when you book.
Isn’t flying across borders slow and complicated?
Not for you. We arrange permits, customs and landing clearances in advance and use smaller airports with quick immigration.
When is the best time to go?
It depends on what you want to see. The migration is in Kenya’s Maasai Mara from about July to October and in Tanzania’s Serengeti for much of the rest of the year. April and May are green season: fewer vehicles, lower prices, some rain. Ask us for your dates.
Do I need a visa?
Everyone travelling to Kenya needs an approved eTA before departure; apply at least two weeks ahead. Other countries vary by passport. We’ll tell you what you need for your route.
What vaccinations do I need?
Ask your doctor or a travel clinic; it depends on your route. We recommend anti-malarials for most safari areas.
Can children come?
